- A 'few' people here have taken exception to the way Amiga Technologies is
- trying to do things and to some of the 'preaching' I've done in favor of
- Amiga Technologies.
-
- Hindsight is 20-20, foresight is usually around 40-20. No, Amiga
- Technologies is NOT 'perfect'. No company is! But, what we have sometimes
- forgotten is that the Amiga is not a typical computer nor are we Amiga
- fanatics typical users.
-
- What makes the Amiga 'special' is NOT just the graphics, the
- user-friendliness, the low overhead, the robustness of our OS ... it is also
- the blood, sweat, and tears that so many have given to the product.
-
- The Amiga computer is a compilation of ideas from some of the most unusually
- talented and far-sighted people in the business. Every Amiga computer has
- that 'special' touch of soul that so many have worked hard to give it. We
- have enjoyed the wildest speculations and determination in the business from
- some of the most unlikely people. Looks are usually deceiving, but take a
- look at the original crew who brought us the Amiga. Would you believe that
- these guys could do so much with so little for so long?
-
- BUT, life changes and we must change with it. Some of the team at Amiga
- Technologies are old friends to us, yet we treat them like infidels! Some of
- the new team have that same determination, grit, and outspoken manner that
- we have become accustomed to yet we fail to believe when they speak. We
- blame them for the ills of the past and will NOT even give them the benefit
- of the doubt.
-
- I see post after post after post from the same three or four people who
- state over and over the following reasons for their distress:
-
- The pricing is too high. No HD floppies. Old technology. Lack of a plan. No
- advertising. No developer support or contact. Let's take these one at a time.
-
- Pricing is too high? There are several considerations to be made here. The
- original inventory was NOT put together in a manner that best suits
- production. Boxes and boxes of misc items to sort and go through. BUT, you
- can't just throw it away when the user base is clammoring to have demand
- filled. So, for monetary reasons and for us, they put the units together and
- got them to market faster than any other new startup company in history.
- BUT, we bitch ...
-
- No HD floppies? Dr Kittel tried to tell us that sourcing was almost
- impossible and that some rework would need to be done with the stuff that IS
- on the market. He also told us that timing was important and that the price
- would have been even higher. Some ran for the Dell HD drives and have found
- that they work 'mostly' at best and sometimes not at all! But we bitch ...
-
- Old technology? Just how much R&D can YOU do in such a short time while ALSO
- trying to outsource parts, production, and distribution channels? Yes, it's
- 'old' technology right now. More IS in the works! But, we bitch ...
-
- Lack of a plan? Hell, the plan has been bandied about here for the last few
- months. Who is NOT aware of what Amiga Technologies has in mind concerning
- old technology to fill demand while working on hardware upgrades for the
- next years models? Who is NOT aware of the efforts taking place to port over
- the OS, etc to the PPC? Who is NOT aware that PhaseV is nearing completion?
- Who is NOT aware of the Power Amiga that is planned? But, we bitch ...
-
- Lack of advertising? What exactly would YOU advertise? 'Hey folks, look at
- this fancy Amiga computer. We barely have stable production and can't yet
- fill even pent up demand, but we are still spending 50 million on worldwide
- advertising because we are stupid.' Yeah, right! Put MY money into R&D right
- now. Let's advertise when we have something available to really sell that
- will knock their nose in the dirt! We'd STILL bitch ...
-
- No developer support or contact? Yes, 'slow' developer support and contact
- would be more appropriate. BUT, how did Olaf Barthel get contracted to work
- for Amiga Technologies? How did PhaseV get specs to work on the PPC cards?
- These are only two examples of developer contact with Amiga Technologies.
- There are more that shall remain nameless. Great strides have been made in
- this area and I feel sure that details will be released shortly. But, we'll
- still bitch ...
-
- Another bone of contention is lack of information from Amiga Technologies.
- Well, folks, the library is a great asset if ya know how to use it! Much
- info is available on Schmidtt and on Escom. I have never had a problem
- getting responses to my questions and many others will tell you the same
- thing. Are those of us receiving replies just lucky or is it our 'approach'?
-
- Suppose I send YOU a note that basically reads 'I want to know XYZ, or
- else'? You'd tell me to shove it. I'm quite sure that the Amiga Technologies
- people are up to their asses in alligators and there's no one draining the
- swamp right now, but they STILL take time to reply to constructive
- criticisms and to questions about policy and the future of the Amiga.
-
- I have felt ashamed and been appalled at the way Amiga Technologies and the
- people who have frequented this newsgroup from AT have been treated by
- 'loyal Amiga fanatics' here. While YOU may not appreciate 'honesty', Dr
- Kittel's blood and soul are inside YOUR Amiga 500, 1200, 2000, 3000 and 4000
- just as Dave Haynie's and Paul Jessup's is. Some respect is do him for that
- whether we agree with his conclusions or not! Think about it every time your
- fingers touch the keys! PLEASE ...
